It marks the effectiveness of aluminium packaging recycling and outlines its consumption growth outlooks in Russia and worldwide.

The review of 25 reports, made at the first international Conference on the production and application of aluminium packaging. 130 specialists from 85 companies from 22 countries of Europe, North America and Asia participated in the forum taken place for the first time in Russia. The participants discussed the state and outlooks of the Russian and world aluminium packaging market development, processes and equipment for the production of foil, laminates, cans, containers, tubes, aerosol containers, caps and lids, modern packaging materials for food, pharmaceutical and other products as well as packaging design.


"State-of-the-art manufacture of aluminium alloy extrusions."

Based on the analysis of the reports at the fifth World Congress “Aluminium-2000”, taken place in Rome in March, 2003, the author pointed out the most important factors of the progress in the machinery and technology for the production of aluminium alloy extrusions. Compact horizontal presses with front loading, isothermal extrusion, quenching of extrusions on the press plate, features of the tool production and operation, extrusion process simulation as well as new extrusion surface treatment processes are among them. The author drew a conclusion about the importance of the issues under discussion for the domestic extrusion production.

It is said that the Conference is supported by leaders of international associations in the field of aluminium and packaging materials production, representatives of the largest producers of aluminium and aluminium-based materials as well as companies, interested in the aluminium packaging application. The article gives the analysis of the main tasks, the solution of which will contribute to the progress in the sphere of aluminium packaging and its market expansion. "Creation of the pipe cross rolling process."

The article reviews materials reflecting fundamentals of the theory, technology, equipment and industrial developing of the cross rolling process of large pipes and shells out of aluminium alloys. It is shown that the cross rolling process has a highly localized deformation spot, which causes the presence of significant additional cyclic shear deformation. Determining influence of these deformations on process conditions and performance of products is identified in the article. Rational schemes of the process implementation are substantiated. The article reviews the development of equipment calculation schemes, which served as a basis for the construction of cross rolling machines for pipes and shells with the diameter ranging from 100 to 2000 mm and the length up to 8000 mm, with the diameter to wall thickness ratio from 100 to 1000. The article presents manufacturing techniques for the production of different aluminium alloy products with the application of thermomechanical treatment on the basis of the cross rolling process.

The influence of different alloying elements and thermomechanical manufacture modes on electrotechnical and mechanical properties of aluminum alloy wire is analyzed in the article. On the basis of the analysis of the International conferences’ documents on secondary aluminum held in 2000-2001, some trends in aluminum recycling were specified: gradual shift of aluminum recycling industry to the developing countries, increase of the share of wrought alloys and high-purity alloys in the secondary aluminum, quality improvement of the recycled metal, wide use of innovations, integration of recycling aluminum facilities in the developed countries, worsening of the situation with aluminum scrap in Russia.

Based on the examples of the modern foreign facilities and processes of scrap preparation for melting, melting itself, melt and dross treatment, casting of the secondary aluminum alloys, the big progress in aluminum recycling, achieved in the latest years is shown. To ensure competitiveness for the Russian secondary aluminum in the world market, and to develop aluminum application in the local industry, the technical modernization of the Russian aluminum recyclers is required.

Almost every third tone of the used aluminum in the world goes for the production of the transportation means. Aluminum processing new technologies for the products’ manufacture, establish big opportunities for further development of aluminum and its alloys application. The authors of the article, experts of the consulting company ALUSIL, discuss the aluminum application in autos, aircraft, shipbuilding and railcars production. The main conclusion of the article is that it is especially relevant for Russia to use new technologies for the production of transportation means, as Russia is the greatest world producer of primary aluminum, which consumes only 15% the produced aluminum.

The requirements to increase a technical level, safety and economic efficiency of the electric power transmission lines dictate a necessity to use strengthened wire of aluminum alloys to produce electric conductors. In the article the choice of material for conductive wire production is substantiated that results in the reduction of energy losses, mounting costs and maintenance costs for overhead electric lines as well as reduce a fire possibility compared to pure aluminum that makes it possible to use these wires instead of copper conductors inside the houses and buildings.

Based on the analysis of the reports at the International Aluminum Extrusion Technology Seminar ET-2000 a conclusion was made about the appearance of the qualitatively new extrusion billet in the late 90-s, which has the following characteristics: regulation within the narrow limits of the chemical composition, phase structure, size of DAS, size of cast grain and segregation zone of the surface. Some technologies ensuring this high-quality level of the billets are briefly described.

On May 18-19, 2000 a regular seminar for aluminum extrusion technology -"ET-2000 (7th International Aluminum Extrusion Technology Seminar) was held in Chicago. A review of reports on the latest developments in the technology and equipment for extrusion process proves evidence of a significant progress achieved in the main development directions recently . Particular attention was paid to the isothermal extrusion , new tendencies in press construction, improvement of handling equipment, control of dimension of an extruded shape and new applications for the extruded products.

For elimination of the deficit of the high quality aluminum extruded shapes due to import reduction, in Russia a necessity came in to construct new facilities within construction firms. Basic directions for technical improvement of the extrusion lines in order to increase the quality of the extruded shapes, yields and production rates were reviewed. A list of architectural sections manufactured by the Russian producers was attached and an analysis of a number of typical drawbacks was made.

On the basis of the example of the International Concern METRA which produces 75,000 tonnes of aluminum alloy extruded shapes per year including 45,000 tons for construction purposes, the development of conglomerate incorporating enterprises for production and processing of extruded shapes as well as all divisions for development, manufacture and sale of the architectural sections is described. Such integration of the extruded shape producers and construction companies is typical for many firms - leaders in the aluminum alloy extrusion market.

Some problems of the Russian producers of aluminum alloy architectural sections as well as of importers after the financial crisis of 1998 are disclosed. The perspective is to develop cooperation between the local and foreign producers in the sphere of extension of the use of the most effective profiles and increase in quality of the extruded products. Obtaining of a certificate for compliance of the extruded shape production with ISO 9001 and ISO 9002 by a number of plants is a good precondition of the growth of the production technical level.
